Slightly greater than 1% of the population use Scottish Gaelic as their language of everyday use, primarily in the northern and western regions of the country. Scotland's location on the north-western periphery of Europe did not mean the country had a small part in the Second World War. This state of affairs continued until May 1999 when Scotland's Parliament was established following a referendum.
